Chapter Four

Six Weeks Later:

We had applied for the marriage license and Kate had gone into full Bridezilla mode. Not being satisfied with trying on the chosen dress, she made appointments at every wedding dress retailer and dragged me along with her. I had no idea that there were so many shades of white, until now. And that went for my suit too. It had to be the exact same white as her dress material. She even went as far as to get me to look at white DM’s and canvas shoes but I put my foot down on that demand. She was going to have the wedding that she had always wanted, god she’d told me about it enough times over the years dropping hints into conversations like, ‘If I was to get married, I’d have a bouquet like that,’ or, ‘I know exactly how I’m going to wear my hair on my wedding day.’ Well, so far, she hasn’t stuck to one of her childhood dreams, but then, who could blame her really. Her taste in doing things were far from how I would do them. If it had been left up to me, I would have just gone to City Hall and signed the papers. But this is Kate who I’m comparing myself to. She’s nothing like me. She likes dresses, high heeled shoes, painting her fingernails and the color pink, which I detest.

The morning of the wedding, my home had been taken over by hairstylists, makeup artists, the wedding planner, although I have no idea what she had planned, as Kate had rallied around personally seeing to everything. The caterers were in the kitchen, cooking and adding last minute touches in decorating pies and cakes.

The wedding cake—a one-tier heart, red-velvet cake, covered with white fondant and decorated with silver sugar hearts, silver sugar wishing bones and a white and silver horseshoe cake topper. It was simple and elegant. Probably the only simple thing about this wedding.

And then there was the Wedding Planner Selena Hext, an old college friend of Kate’s, whom she hadn’t seen in years but had heard she had become a Wedding Planner and found her through Facebook. Selena had taken over our home in the past week. Everything had been decorated with white pom-poms and white streamers. We’d had our pre-wedding pictures taken professionally and the best one’s were framed and hung on the living room walls. I don’t even know why she bothered to hire her, as she executed all of the planning herself, taking over every little decision that Selena had made. Anyone would have thought that it was a grand affair in some expensive hotel but we were having a beach ceremony down at Rock Beach just past Golden Gate Bridge and then a garden party in our back yard. Kate liked to put on a show and she had certainly outdone herself on this occasion.

We didn’t choose to do the traditional, I don’t see her dress, and she doesn’t see my suit.
